30 Days of Fandom Meme: Day 1

miramira30 days hath September, and so does this meme. A sign? I think so. *cracks knuckles* Let's do this.
1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
The first stuff I wrote that was written explicitly as fanfic was for Harry Potter. The source material meshes well with my style: I can concentrate on characters, dialogue, and plot as opposed to setting, and there's ample opportunity to blend humor with serious moments. There's also enough that Rowling just hints at or leaves unexplored that I can put my own stamp on things without straying too far from canon.
Looking back, though, a good chunk of the "original" fic I wrote before I learned how to worldbuild on my own was heavily influenced by Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci series, to the point that I don't think I would have prevailed in court had it ever gotten published and her estate decided to sue. Fortunately there was no risk of that happening, as I also hadn't learned about why self-insert Mary Sues were such a terrible thing at that point.
