It's fest reveal time for Remix and Beholder! (And boy, am I depressed this is the last time I'll get to say that about the latter.) First, the stories written for me:

Remix:
Like a Bull in a Joke Shop, by [livejournal.com profile] iulia_linnea  (remixed from Cost-Benefit Analysis).  The original is a silly dialogue-only gen ficlet about Alastor Moody's failed attempt to become a shop clerk.  (I was originally going to do a "five things" story where Moody would go through several misguided career choices before finally winding up at MLE, but ran out of energy after the first installment.)  The remix keeps the humor and the style, but adds a great deal of enjoyable backstory - much of it involving a character I only included as an afterthought, and may now need to adjust my headcanon to incorporate.

Beholder:
Could Not Love You Any Better, by [livejournal.com profile] katmarajade, a terribly sweet (but never cloying) Charity Burbage/Amelia Bones romance.  I'm always a sucker for a good Amelia pairing, and as it turns out, Charity is an inspired choice.  The fic captures the insecurities that beset even the most established of couples from time to time in a way that rings true to life, with a delightful resolution and too many clever details that help flesh out the characters and the relationship to list.

And now for my work... )

Next up, Not Prime Time and...well, I guess we'll have to see, won't we?

Um, so, first of all, hi. Depression + overwork = really bad combination. I've been around; just too exhausted and uninspired to say anything, let alone do any writing. But I did manage to pull myself together for Yuletide, so here's hoping 2014 will be better.

Before I post my stuff, all due praise for my gift fic, A Night Out by Syksy, which is the sweet and funny Cats of Grand Central story I have been craving lo these many Yuletides.  No real familiarity with canon required (though you might need a glossary for some of the terms), so if you've ever wanted a cat's take on Madam Butterfly or opera in general, check it out.

My main assignment was All the Mirrored Ways, a Justice League/Justice League Unlimited story starring Shayera Hol for yhlee/etothey (who also wrote some awesome Cyteen stories that deserve a look).  It relies very heavily on a lot of moments of canon divergence, so not the most newbie-friendly story, but I loved having an excuse to write in the fandom and the conceit seems to have gone over well.

And then, because I was so freaking excited to be engaging in creative activity again, I started on the treats.  (Recipients whose other stories I haven't commented on, please don't think I don't love you; I'm just not familiar with your fandoms).

Won't Be Long Now for littledust, which by happy coincidence functions both as a post-canon stand-alone and as a sequel for my other In the Heights Yuletide fic.  I loved the prompt (Vanessa helps Nina in her foray into politics), and I love these characters, and I really wish I'd had more time for this one.  Maybe I'll finish the trilogy as a New Year's Resolution.

What We May Be for ironed_orchid, a.k.a. the other other other other Galaxy Quest fic.  Not that I'm really complaining, since it's more about character dynamics than the fandom meta-commentary that makes the source material so great, and I think it got a boost from all the other recs.  And writing dialogue for Alan Rickman characters is just fun.

This Be the Verse for hollimichele (who wrote the Galaxy Quest fic that got recced all over the place - and deservedly so - along with a Young Wizards story I really enjoyed).  Another one I wish I'd had more time to play with, since I loved the idea of Matilda meeting her brother again and then never actually got around to the meeting, but I figured I could at least give her the next best person to talk to.  And of course, since it's the story I scrambled to finish up just as Madness was closing, it's now the most popular thing I've ever written in terms of kudos and comments.  (Again, not that I'm complaining.)

So, how has everyone been?
miramira: book stack (Default)
Okay, so official Yuletide prompt? General plot is in place (though some very critical details remain to be hammered out) and I have some key anchoring lines of dialogue, but that's as far as I've gotten. Crazy crossover treat inspired by other fandoms the recipient's mentioned in his/her journal? Rapidly spiraling into an intricate multi-fic AU involving characters s/he hasn't even mentioned. I'm beginning to think the reason I've never felt the need to "expand my creativity" through recreational substances is that my muse drops enough acid for the both of us.

Anyway, meme entries!

Welp, so much for getting things done in their allotted time frame. (Don't even ask about NaNoWriMo. I've decided that if I do the writing prep that would have allowed me to get further than a one-paragraph concept pitch had I done it in advance, I'll count that as a win.)

The good news is, I do have some reason for distraction: I start work on Monday! And I have been writing little bits of fic in the meantime, including a couple of pieces on my favorite Harry Potter family, the Boneses. Very depressing pieces, granted, but I had to balance the 2001: A Space Odyssey crossover somehow.

Anyway, I promised myself I'd finish this meme, and I will. Just not on any guaranteed schedule. Let's see how far I can get today before I get bored or devolve into rambling.

What the hell. This one's borrowed from [personal profile] musyc:

Pick one of my fics, and I'll give you three details that didn't make it into the fic. Background canon, deleted scenes, or a look into the future. My choice, but if you have a specific question you can ask it in your request.

Unfortunately, I don't have a master list (should probably fix that, shouldn't I?), but you can browse through my Ao3 collection here.

Hello? Anyone still out there?

*sound of crickets*

Yeah, yeah, I probably deserve that. And it's not like I have that many followers on this account anyway, though their numbers have somehow increased in my absence. (*waves to [personal profile] lyras*)

But for the benefit of anyone still out there, hi! Since my last post on here, I've officially earned my degree (somehow) and officially left Boston. I do not have a job yet, though I'm working on it. (If you happen to know of any mid-level fundraising positions in the greater DC or Philly area, shoot me a message and let's talk.)

Also, to maintain my sanity in the midst of the wall of spreadsheets that was my final semester, I wrote fic for [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder and [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen. By coincidence, both my stories got posted at the same time, which allowed me to play a fun little game of "Which typically hated character are people more willing to suspend their dislike and read about: Rita Skeeter or Marietta Edgecombe?" (For the record, the comments came out about even, though more people made a point of noting they'd never expected to feel anything approaching goodwill toward Rita.) If you'd like to play along and haven't already, the stories are now up at my Ao3 account:

Between Prospects (Rita Skeeter/Mrs. Zabini, background Rita/others and Mr. Zabini/Mrs.Zabini; R for sexual situations and offscreen minor character deaths; 6333 words)
Strength in Numbers (Marietta Edgecombe, Millicent Bulstrode, Lavender Brown, background Percy Weasley/Audrey; G apart from one or two slightly naughty words; 5103 words)

Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my gifts from both exchanges: a lovely Pansy/Millicent vignette by [personal profile] musyc for Beholder, and the even more unexpected but delightful platonic pairing of Pansy and Arthur for Springtime_Gen by [personal profile] lyras.

So, anyway, I think those are the important items. I know better than to promise more regular updates from now on, but I think I can at least guarantee greater frequency.

Thanks for taking this on! I'm afraid I don't have any previous Yuletide requests you can refer to, but feel free to poke around this journal for some examples of my own fic. I realize it's all in fandoms (oh, all right, a fandom) you can't use, though, so here's a general summary of my likes and dislikes:

Preferences )

Easy enough, right? If not, no worries; like I said, good writing's the important thing, and I'm sure you've got that covered. Now, let's move on to why you're really here:

Fandom-Specific Requests and Handy Resource Links )

I think that's everything you need to know. At least, I hope it is, because I'm afraid I'm a very difficult recipient to stalk: I try to keep my (friends-only) personal journal somewhat separate from this one, and I don't have too much time online anyway. (For any friends wondering how I expect to manage this and pass classes...I need to do something to try and maintain sanity.)

Happy writing! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with, and don't worry: I'm sure I'll love it!

I have a great deal of preliminary research on my major project this semester due Sunday, a major paper due next Friday, and various and sundry other assignments that need to be completed in the intervening period. So if this piece comes off as a trifle bleak and fatalistic, my apologies.

I may have gotten a tad carried away, but...it was for the cats! How can you blame me?

Anyway, here's my assigned drabble for [livejournal.com profile] pauraque, who wanted a threesome in which one participant realized s/he was the odd one out:

Generous to a Fault (Fred/Angelina, George/Angelina; R for a threesome gone wrong in a non-incesty way; 300 words)

And here are the two I decided to pinch-hit:

Wit and Learning (Gen: Hermione and Ravenclaws; G; drabble)
Annuals (Gen: Neville; G; drabble)

And here is the one written for me, which I swear the Sorting Cats hand-picked, because I can't think of anyone better suited to handle a history-themed prompt than [livejournal.com profile] a_t_rain. And she doesn't disappoint here: Wand of Elder, Never Prosper (Gen; G; 300 words)

There are still a few prompts up for grabs until about 7 pm Eastern Time, by the way, if anyone wants to jump in.

(x-posted to Live Journal)

There's a lot of stuff I'd like to write, but I'm having trouble getting started, so I'm borrowing this challenge from [personal profile] musyc in an effort to get unblocked. Comment with a character or pairing from one of my fandoms and an object, and I'll write you a ficlet (somewhere between 100-500 words, unless I'm feeling really inspired). I won't do ASOIaF, but any of the following are fair game: Harry Potter, Discworld, Star Trek (all variations other than DS9), Shakespeare, Greek/Roman mythology, West Wing, Nolanverse Batman, Buffy, Dr. Horrible, and various other musicals. If you'd like something not on the list that you think I might know, feel free to ask, and I'll try to oblige.

Speaking of Star Trek, does anyone know of any good sources of reboot!gen fic? The various kink memes have been surprisingly enjoyable, but I guess an Andorian can't change her antennae.

My 2009 [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder entry, plus a pair of drabbles I missed from [livejournal.com profile] mctabby's 2007 Cat's Birthday Drabblethon.

Drabbles
Untitled (The Malfoy family line is not as pure as they would like to think). (Gen: Lucius Malfoy; G.)
Untitled (Scrimgeour Family Reunion). (Gen: Rufus Scrimgeour; G.)

Fic
Lady of Sorrows. (The Grey Lady/Sir Cadogan; PG; 5274 words.) A budding romance between a ghost and a portrait could be a tale out of a storybook. But does Helena Ravenclaw's "fairy godfather" have good intentions, or something more sinister in mind?
miramira: book stack (Default)
(Don't want this journal to be totally empty in the unlikely event someone wanders over here after the [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder reveals.)

Drabbles
For 2008_drabbles (original comm has been deleted, alas):
Table I, Political. (15 drabbles, gen and various pairings, highest rating PG.) Of particular note: The Cruelest Cut. (Gen: Susan Bones; PG. Third Place - Best Canon Compliant.)
Table C, Women. (8 drabbles, gen and various pairings, highest rating PG.) Of particular note: Look at Me. (Gen: Madam Rosmerta, Minerva McGonagall; PG. Third Place - Best Gen.)

For [insanejournal.com profile] phoenix_flies, from strongest to weakest:
Irreparable Damage. (Gen: Percy Weasley, G.)
Intoxication. (Neville Longbottom/Hannah Abbott, G.)
Something in Common. (Viktor Krum/Penelope Clearwater, implied Ron Weasley/Hermione Granger; G.)
The Messenger. (Gen: Parvati Patil, with implied Ron Weasley/Lavender Brown and Ron Weasley/Hermione Granger; G.)

Fic
For [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder:
Driving Mrs. Weasley. (Molly Weasley/Arthur Weasley; G; 1403 words). In a missing moment from Chamber of Secrets, Molly and Arthur make up after the Ford Anglia fight.

For [livejournal.com profile] hp_rarities:
Something Old, Something New. (Pansy Parkinson/Draco Malfoy, Pansy Parkinson/Ron Weasley; PG-13; 6688 words.) Draco Malfoy is getting married. To someone who isn't Pansy Parkinson. Drastic measures must be taken.

For [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest:
Immutability. (Gen: Minerva McGonagall, Amelia Bones; PG; 1162 words.) Miss Bones has a problem Minerva doesn't think she can solve. She's more right than she realizes.
