So, where were we?
Nov. 11th, 2011 03:15 pmWelp, so much for getting things done in their allotted time frame. (Don't even ask about NaNoWriMo. I've decided that if I do the writing prep that would have allowed me to get further than a one-paragraph concept pitch had I done it in advance, I'll count that as a win.)
The good news is, I do have some reason for distraction: I start work on Monday! And I have been writing little bits of fic in the meantime, including a couple of pieces on my favorite Harry Potter family, the Boneses. Very depressing pieces, granted, but I had to balance the 2001: A Space Odyssey crossover somehow.
Anyway, I promised myself I'd finish this meme, and I will. Just not on any guaranteed schedule. Let's see how far I can get today before I get bored or devolve into rambling.
10 - Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?
For those of you who aren't already aware, I have an embarrassing confession to make: I used to take part in the infamous Harry Potter shipping debates, on the side of Ron/Hermione. I was more passionately against the idea that the books' symbolism required graduate-level analysis (seriously, hippogriffs? WTF?) than for the couple, but I still hesitate a bit before reading alternate pairings involving them from an unfamiliar writer.
That said, I can't seem to write any fic myself that uses their relationship as more than background. I've written Molly/Arthur, which I think has a similar dynamic. But the only times either Ron or Hermione have been romantic leads in any of my fic, they've been with other people. For the record, I'm still not sold on Hermione/Dean the way I wrote it (I feel like I should have done more with their shared Muggle background), but I really like the Ron/Pansy story.
11 – Genre: do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
Most of my work is gen, and even my romance (primarily het, some femslash, and the very occasional slash piece) tends not to be explicit. The conflict in my stories tends to be of the internal struggle variety, though the WIPs I'm most interested in at the moment call for more action and suspense.
12 - Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?
Ah, that would be one of the WIPs. All I'm going to say on the subject for now is that JKR shouldn't have tried to get away with dismissing Death as "just a metaphor." Not when she also has a character named Susan with a suspiciously apropos last name.
